The first Sunday School for First Presbyterian was organized in January 1885 with 20 teachers and 135 students. The Ruling Elders said, “We urge upon the members of the Church, that they take more interest in the Sunday School. The future growth and progress of the Church depends largely on the Sunday School.” Christian Education at First Central looks a little different now than it did in 1885, but the emphasis on education remains the same.
Adult Sunday School
All adult classes welcome both men and women of any age and life situation. You may choose to participate in a particular class for a few weeks while a specific study is being offered, or elect to call one class your home.
Weekly Classes
Amazing Grace Class meets in Room 209. This class was founded by the African members of our church so that people who speak French, Swahili, and/or Kinyarwanda could learn about their faith in their native language. They have been walking through every book of the Bible for many years. |
Genesis Class meets in Room 214. An adult lecture-centric class that uses the Bible as our primary resource but discusses the historical, social, and cultural aspects as well. We think about what Jesus is saying to the eyewitnesses of His ministry, to the first readers of the Gospel, and to us today. |
Good Ground Class meets in Room 203. The Good Ground class uses study books to examine Scripture from various viewpoints and to discuss its meaning and applications to our daily lives. If you like to read books about faith and it’s practical applications in your life, this is a great class for you! We begin each class with a time for sharing concerns and for prayer. There is much room for friends and visitors to gather and learn together.

King David Class meets in Room 201. Ours is a warm loving group of people who meet to study and share our thoughts, insights, and understanding of scripture and its lessons for our lives. Fellowship is a major part of our meetings as we enjoy and empathize with the joys and concerns of our classmates on their walks toward a richer life with Christ. |
The Disciples Class Class meets in Room 212. In the Disciples class we work together to interpret and understand the scriptures by encouraging conversations with each other. All participants are invited to share their knowledge and life experiences to help us reach a deeper understanding of God’s Word. In addition to Sunday morning class, social gatherings outside of church help us to provide a stronger support group. We welcome anyone who would like to come and experience the new and fresh approach to learning the Disciple Class way. |
S.A.L.T. (Studying and Learning Together) Class meets in Room 205. This class is our newest church school offering for adults at FCPC. SALT is a “one-off” class with discussion as it’s focus. You do not need to read any materials in preparation before showing up on Sunday morning, and you do not need to have attended the week before to be able to contribute to the discussion. It’s a great place to make new friends and have a deep discussion. |
